Some of the Most Common Causes of Hard-Starts and No-Starts

As soon as you notice that your car is having any issues with starting up, you’ll want to be proactive about getting to the shop. This way, you’ll give yourself the best chance to address the issue before it worsens and leaves you stranded. At Bay Brothers Automotive, our local mechanics are experts at addressing problems that cause hard-starts and no-starts.

Common Reasons that Engines Struggle to Start

A failing starter is one issue that can prevent your engine from coming roaring to life. One symptom of starter trouble is that you turn the key and your dash lights come on, but your car doesn’t start and you hear a clicking noise. Starter failure may also cause a grinding sound.

Problems with fuel supply can also make it hard for your car to start. A bad fuel pump can prevent gas from being successfully directed from the tank toward the engine. Signs of fuel pump trouble include sputtering, decreasing MPGs, and a whining noise coming from the tank. If your fuel filter is all clogged up, then your engine might not get the fuel it needs to fire up. This issue can be avoided by getting your fuel filter replaced every 25,000 miles or so. Dirty fuel injectors can also make it harder for your engine to start.

Issues with the battery/charging system are also often to blame for no-start. Batteries die due to issues including old age, leaving on headlights, corroded/loose connections, and parasitic draws. A faulty alternator can also cause a dead battery. Your alternator may be failing if your headlights are flickering or your interior electrical accessories aren’t working right. A malfunctioning alternator can also cause dashboard warning lights to flash on with the letters ALT or GEN, or in the shape of a little battery icon.
