If your alternator isn’t working right, then your battery’s power reserve could become drained to the point that your engine fails to fire up. This makes it important that you get to the shop when you first suspect that alternator trouble is brewing. At Bay Brothers Automotive, our local mechanics specialize in alternator and auto electric repair in the greater Tampa area.

Common Signs of an Alternator Problem

One common sign of alternator failure is that a warning light flashes on with the letters ALT or GEN. In some cars, this light is instead in the shape of a little battery. Oftentimes, drivers don’t heed warning lights. But it’s always best to get to the shop before the problem worsens and potentially ends up leaving you stranded.

A dead battery is another possible sign that you have a bad alternator. However, just because you have a dead battery doesn’t mean you should assume that a failing alternator is the culprit. There are several other reasons why a battery may die, such as loose/corroded connections, parasitic draws, old age, and leaving your headlights on. But if there isn’t another obvious reason for your dead battery, then it’s worth checking to see if your alternator is malfunctioning.

Alternator failure can also cause problems with the vehicle’s interior electrical accessories. With a faulty alternator, power seats may adjust slower than usual, or you may have issues with your radio. Today’s automobiles regularly have computers that can figure out which accessories should have their power supply diminished when the alternator isn’t working properly. This way, power is saved for the car’s most crucial electrical needs, such as the headlights. That said, dimming/flickering headlights could mean there’s trouble with your alternator.
