Simple Ways to Decrease the Risk of Major Transmission Trouble

Bay Brothers Automotive • 5 November 2022

When transmission issues develop, they often escalate fast. This makes it important to get to the shop as soon as you suspect a problem is brewing. By staying current with transmission maintenance, you can help to prevent problems from arising in the first place. At Bay Brothers Automotive, we provide expert transmission service in the greater Tampa area. Here are three easy ways to reduce the risk of serious transmission trouble.

Stay Current with Transmission Fluid Exchanges

Transmission fluid provides fluid pressure, cooling, rust prevention, and lubrication, so it’s crucial that you’re driving the right amount and that it’s uncontaminated. Generally, transmission fluid needs to be exchanged somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. However, you’ll want to check your owner’s manual to see exactly how often your particular vehicle needs this to be done. During a transmission fluid exchange, old polluted fluid is emptied from the car and replaced with the proper level of clean fluid.

Check Your Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid should be checked once per month so that you’re more likely to notice early on if your fluid has started to burn and/or has gotten too low. Typically, transmission fluid is best checked with the vehicle still running.

See the Mechanic when You Notice a Sign of Transmission Trouble

Warning signs of transmission trouble include fluid leaks, delayed shifting, and the vehicle suddenly slipping out of gear while you’re cruising along. If you drive a manual transmission, you should be familiar with signs of a clutch problem, such as grinding, burning odors, and a clutch pedal that has become noisy, sticky, or spongy. Because seemingly minor transmission issues can rapidly worsen, it’s always best to get to the shop ASAP
